Phan Đăng Hoàng SS27: A Vietnamese Myth Wakes in Milan

Some fairy tales belong to daylight. Tấm Cám has always seemed made for the hour after it. There are transformations, vanished bodies, birds, trees, fruit, memory and return. A woman repeatedly changes form and somehow carries herself through every version.

At Milan Fashion Week, Phan Đăng Hoàng took that metamorphosis as the emotional center of Spring/Summer 2027. His statement for the season, “Nothing truly disappears. It transforms,” gave the collection its rhythm.

The runway felt warm even at its grandest. For Phan Đăng Hoàng, heritage is becoming less a subject and more a language.

Phan Đăng Hoàng Lets Tấm Transform Instead of Dressing Her Up

The cleverness of Tấm Cám lies in its distance from literal character dressing. Phan Đăng Hoàng works with transformation itself.

Tấm’s cycle of disappearance and return becomes a system of shifting volumes. One silhouette hugs the body closely; another rises around the shoulder. A skirt gathers heavily at the hip and releases toward the floor. A narrow column suddenly acquires a sculptural bow. Soft fabric meets architectural construction.

Each change carries a different emotional temperature. The collection moves between vulnerability and self-possession, delicacy and grandeur, memory and freedom. Those states make the fairy tale useful to contemporary fashion because they allow Phan Đăng Hoàng to translate narrative into proportion.

The Kinh Bắc woman provides another visual foundation. The áo yếm appears through exposed shoulders, narrow bodices, and halter-like lines. The khăn mỏ quạ influences the framing around the face and head. Traditional references are stretched, enlarged, and repositioned until they become part of Hoàng’s silhouette vocabulary.

The collection includes brocade developed with HANGSILK, a continuing partner in Hoàng’s work. The textile brings surface depth, light and cultural memory into the runway, while denim introduces a looser urban energy. The collaboration is also developing a special brocade line for the Vietnamese market, giving the runway experiment a life beyond a single show.

Brocade carries history through its density and woven richness. Denim immediately relaxes it. Embroidery gains another mood when placed near washed cotton. A precious surface suddenly belongs in an everyday wardrobe.

Silk, satin, velvet, and sheer fabrics extend the conversation.

Heavy textiles provide ceremony. Transparent layers create air. Satin catches light through movement. Cotton brings structure. Floral jacquard gives the evening pieces a lush, almost illustrated surface.

The collection becomes especially beautiful when these materials behave like different chapters of the same tale.

Golden Orioles Carry the Fairy Tale Across the Fabric

Northern Vietnamese artisans worked with silk-thread embroidery across the garments, with motifs including golden orioles and lotus flowers. The craft required hundreds of hours across the collection, placing human labor directly inside Hoàng’s mythic world.

The golden oriole is particularly poetic inside Tấm Cám. Bird imagery already belongs naturally to a story of transformation, and on the runway it becomes a flicker of life against trenches, belts, and sculptural surfaces.

Lotus embroidery carries a softer symbolism. Its familiar Vietnamese imagery sits beside modern tailoring and contemporary cut-outs, creating a quiet bridge between cultural memory and metropolitan clothing.

Fabric twists into knots, falls through asymmetric folds, expands through bias-cut flounces and pools around the legs. A white fitted tank with a black draped skirt creates one of the collection’s cleanest examples: the upper body remains quiet while the skirt twists into a dark sculptural mass.

The second energy rises upward. Shoulders broaden. Bust constructions lift away from the body. Ruffles expand. Headpieces frame the face with ceremonial scale.

Look 40 brings this language close to fantasy: an ivory gown builds dramatic upper volume around a mỏ quạ-like frame, completed by an embellished fan. It looks like an image discovered halfway between folk memory and a dream after midnight.

Elsewhere, a cream embroidered column with a sculptural hip bow allows the body to remain long and clear. A beige trench receives complex paneling, draping and an embroidered sash, turning everyday outerwear into something almost talismanic.

The strongest looks in Tấm Cám carry one dominant gesture.

A fitted blue top with an asymmetric cotton skirt uses bias-cut flounces to create movement through construction.

The tieredlace dress turns Tấm Cám into pure romance, with a fitted bodice opening into irregular ruffled layers that seem to unfold as the model moves. Dusty lilac and embroidered texture give it a soft, nocturnal quality.

Phan Đăng Hoàng also pushes the collection toward urban dressing through lilac blouses, wide trousers and sheer casual dresses. These pieces carry the same fluidity and cultural sensitivity in a more everyday register.

The biggest surprise is an asymmetric black leather top with rust barrel trousers covered in sculptural floral work. The look feels darker and more metropolitan while staying connected to the collection’s mythic language.

Menswear remains secondary, but clean tailoring, structured fits and controlled proportions are executed with confidence. Familiar fabrics and colors preserve a classic foundation while the styling keeps the silhouettes contemporary.

Phan Đăng Hoàng Is Turning Cultural Memory Into a House Language

Tấm Cám is the third physical Milan runway for Phan Đăng Hoàng, yet his relationship with the official Milan calendar already stretches across multiple seasons. Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana lists the Milan-based designer across editions dating to 2023, framing his work around contemporary tailoring, cultural heritage, gender fluidity, and traditional craft.

That continuity matters for a young independent label.

Phan Đăng Hoàng launched his eponymous project in Milan in the early 2020s and has steadily built an operating model around Vietnamese craft partnerships and international presentation. HANGSILK has become a recurring collaborator, while previous collections have also connected the label with Vietnamese footwear makers, Middle Eastern shoe design and Italian jewellery.

Only weeks before Tấm Cám, Hoàng appeared in Vogue China’s Redefining Asia project, a career milestone he described as an opportunity to tell a Vietnamese fashion story through contemporary language.

His earlier collections often started from a medium: ceramics, paper, lacquer, silk painting. Tấm Cám moves toward narrative, character, and emotion. The cultural source gains a heartbeat.

There are still places where the collection asks for further editing. Hoàng himself acknowledged after the show that some elements came together under time pressure and had yet to reach the degree of refinement he wanted. There are still moments where embellishment, romance, and volume compete for visual priority.

And luminosity is ultimately what stays. There is something so warm about Phan Đăng Hoàng SS27. The collection carries cultural pride with gentleness. Even its largest gowns retain a dreamy vulnerability. Transformation becomes survival with grace. The midnight tale keeps moving toward morning.

For Phan Đăng Hoàng, that may also describe the brand itself: still young, increasingly visible, rooted deeply in Vietnam, and steadily learning how to turn memory into a fashion language the international runway can recognize before anybody needs to explain where it came from.
