New York Fashion Week SS27 still has eight particularly juicy stories waiting behind the curtain. There are birthdays involving billions, a designer returning to New York 20 years after deciding he needed more power, a runway staged inside its founder’s former home, and one label whose museum prestige somehow coexists with unpaid-rent stories. Consider this the useful gossip before the clothes start talking.

New York Fashion Week SS27 Has Some Very Expensive Birthdays

Coach turns 85 at an almost suspiciously good moment. Fiscal 2026 revenue reached about $6.9 billion, up 24 percent year over year, while parent company Tapestry acquired roughly 11 million new customers across its brands, around 35 percent of them Gen Z.

Coach CEO Todd Kahn has also discussed a future path toward becoming a $10 billion brand. An 85-year-old leather house attracting teenagers while openly entertaining ten-billion-dollar ambitions feels less like an anniversary and more like a victory lap.

Stuart Vevers has little interest in making SS27 a museum tour. He has talked about manipulating, piecing together and roughing up familiar Coach codes instead. There is a nerdier twist hiding here too: Coach possesses 85 years of leather-goods history, while its serious ready-to-wear vocabulary under Vevers is barely 13 years old.

Khaite celebrates a much smaller number with an equally enormous ambition: ten years. Catherine Holstein has publicly discussed a trajectory that could eventually take the company toward $500 million in annual sales.

Its first standalone Mercer Street store even debuted as a runway setting before becoming a shop, one of those very Khaite gestures where architecture, merchandising and fashion all seem to share the same severe mood.

A second Madison Avenue space focuses more heavily on accessories, including special bags and jewelry. Keep that detail in mind when SS27 starts sending leather goods past us. Half-billion-dollar dreams usually require several commercial heroes, and Khaite already knows the magic of an accidental one: the Nevada boot, designed almost casually in 2019, became its number-one shoe style.

Independence Has Its Own Kind of Anniversary Gossip

Rachel Comey turns 25 without a luxury conglomerate waiting backstage with a birthday cake. The company remains independent, which becomes more impressive once you learn that Comey says it took roughly six years just to reach profitability.

Comey was hand-painting shirts when a stylist connected her with David Bowie. She was advised to charge him a lot of money. Her interpretation of “a lot” was around $100 per shirt. From there came a New Jersey manufacturer, a proper label and, eventually, a first fashion show in September 2001 whose cast included Eugene Hütz carrying a live rooster.

Twenty-five years later, the anniversary muse is somehow equally eccentric. Rosalyn Drexler has been a Pop artist, novelist, playwright, screenwriter and professional wrestler. One of her novels involves a woman romantically entangled with a talking dog. Comey has also already revealed a Coco Bag created with Unreal Snacks, inspired by the metallic interior of a chocolate wrapper and destined for the SS27 runway.

Carolina Herrera reaches 45 with a very different kind of machinery underneath it. Wes Gordon has now spent eight years shaping the post-founder house, while the Carolina Herrera name has enormous commercial visibility far beyond the runway through Puig’s fragrance operation. Carolina Herrera fragrances recorded double-digit growth in the first half of 2026, supported by La Bomba and the continuing strength of Good Girl.

Gordon has recently been widening the definition of the Herrera woman too. One collection used actual New York artists and cultural figures including Amy Sherald, Ming Smith and Hannah Traore as models. Resort then looked toward Georgia O’Keeffe, even picking up tiny details such as the Alexander Calder pin she wore on her shawls.

After destination shows in Rio, Mexico City and Madrid, an anniversary season in New York feels especially symbolic. Watch the white shirts and gowns, naturally, but the more revealing clothes may be the separates that show whether Herrera can belong as comfortably on a Manhattan pavement as it does at a gala.

One Designer Has Waited 20 Years for This New York Return

Sabyasachi first showed at New York Fashion Week in 2006. He later remembered the experience with considerably less romance than the photographs might suggest: he felt he had been ambitious before possessing enough power to make the international push work.

So he left.

Twenty years later, Sabyasachi returns under wildly different circumstances. Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail owns 51 percent of the business. New York already has a 5,800-square-foot Sabyasachi flagship. Delhi recently gained an enormous 26,000-square-foot store, in a market that reportedly contributes around 30 percent of the brand’s global revenue. The business has also been moving through a corporate restructuring into Sabyasachi India Limited.

Then The Metropolitan Museum of Art emailed him.

Sabyasachi initially thought the message was spam.

It turned into a multi-year collaboration beginning with high jewelry based on research into Byzantine, Roman, Greek, Medieval and Islamic objects from The Met’s holdings. Pieces are expected to range from roughly $2,500 to $100,000. The historical loop gets even sweeter: his graduation collection had already explored the Silk Route and Byzantine Empire decades earlier. Somehow the road led back there through New York.

SS27 therefore carries one beautifully petty question underneath all that embroidery: what does the designer who once felt underpowered show New York after spending 20 years accumulating power?

Three Different Homecomings

Tommy Hilfiger has chosen The Plaza Hotel for his runway, which sounds suitably grand until you learn that Tommy and Dee Hilfiger actually lived there for more than a decade. He is effectively staging New York Fashion Week SS27 inside his former home.

The Plaza has already starred in Tommy’s Fall 2026 campaign alongside Travis Kelce, Gigi Hadid, Jisoo, Peggy Gou, Frances Tiafoe and Carmelo Anthony. Kelce deserves more attention than the usual celebrity ambassador because he is also co-designing Spring 2027 product with the company.

Add Tommy’s current relationships with Liverpool FC, Cadillac’s Formula 1 team and the US SailGP Team, and the runway enters a brand world where prep is being aggressively rewired through sport. Tommy Hilfiger produced about $1.1 billion in PVH’s latest quarter, broadly steady year over year, so all that celebrity and sports machinery has an actual commercial assignment behind it.

Luar’s absence from February NYFW somehow produced one of its biggest cultural moments. Raul Lopez received a secret request to make Lady Gaga a salsa-ready gown. Her team kept the project confidential. Lopez discovered where the dress was going while watching Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime show at a friend’s house and suddenly seeing Gaga appear on television wearing it.

Imagine learning that you dressed Lady Gaga for the Super Bowl at the exact same moment as everybody else.

Now Luar returns to the runway carrying that exposure with it. The Ana bag already proved Lopez understands how to stretch a recognizable design code: the shape has been transformed into everything from a hair claw clip to a MAC makeup belt containing dedicated brush compartments. His last collection also dug deeply into Dominican Carnival and used larimar, the rare blue stone associated with the Dominican Republic.

And then there is threeASFOUR, where the gossip becomes unexpectedly serious. Sean Ono Lennon spent more than five years filming the collective for the 94-minute documentary Full Circle. The film follows designers whose work reached museums and celebrities while the business itself wrestled with debt and unpaid rent.

threeASFOUR has existed in various forms since 1998, won a Cooper Hewitt National Design Award and entered collections at institutions including The Met and FIT Museum. Yet American customers currently buy primarily through the designers themselves, including custom work and made-to-order pieces.

For New York Fashion Week SS27, they are returning to the runway after five years with something almost hilariously ordinary by threeASFOUR standards: denim. The new denim capsule treats jeans as a “universal uniform” and is designed around direct-to-consumer availability. After decades of geometric clothing sophisticated enough for museums, one of their most important commercial tests may be whether people simply want to buy the jeans.

That might be the real pleasure of New York Fashion Week SS27.
