New York Fashion Week is about to open with several designers carrying far more backstage baggage than garment bags. Money has changed hands, founders have returned, designers have quit major jobs, retail networks are expanding and one three-year-old label has grown fivefold. SS27 suddenly looks like an excellent place to watch fashion companies rewrite themselves in public.

New York Fashion Week Has Several Reboots Hiding in Plain Sight

Diane von Furstenberg could have staged a pleasant heritage celebration and called it a season. Instead, the house has handed its creative future to Henry Zankov, who will present his first collection as artistic director as DVF returns to the runway for the first time since 2017.

DVF spent several years operating globally through a licensing arrangement before bringing design and operations back in-house. The company upgraded its most famous product too. The wrap dress, introduced in 1974 and still its bestseller, returned to 100 percent silk as management worked to restore quality and pricing.

Then Zankov entered the picture, although technically he had already been there. He worked at DVF from 2014 for four years, returned in 2025 to create a Bergdorf Goodman capsule and now runs his namesake studio from inside DVF’s Meatpacking District headquarters. Better still, he will show DVF on September 10 and Zankov four days later. Editors essentially get an accidental controlled experiment: same designer, same building, two brands, four days apart.

Watch the wrap dress, obviously. More revealing will be the T-shirts, trenches, trousers and knitwear. Zankov has spoken about wanting people to enter DVF for a wardrobe, while his own reputation comes from obsessive color and knit construction.

Across town, Rachel Scott is performing an equally tricky two-house act. Her SS27 collection for Proenza Schouler will be only her second fully realized season there, while Diotima, her own label, shows four days later.

Proenza enters New York Fashion Week with around 80 employees and distribution across more than 350 doors globally, yet its commercial identity changes depending on geography. In America, ready-to-wear carries much of the cultural recognition. Internationally, management says revenue is driven primarily by leather goods.

Fall 2026 offered the first hints of Scott-era handbags, and management has already indicated that September should show a fuller leather-goods proposition. Add a new Los Angeles store and a broader expansion push planned for 2027, and SS27 starts looking less like Creative Director Collection Number Two and more like an early blueprint for the next Proenza business.

Some Designers Finally Have Their Whole Brain Back

Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia might relate to that two-house problem more than anyone. They founded Monse in 2015, became co-creative directors of Oscar de la Renta in 2016 and spent nearly Monse’s entire first decade dividing themselves between two companies.

Kim had worked at Oscar de la Renta for 22 years. Garcia started there as an intern. Their departure therefore closes an enormous chapter, while opening a delicious question: what happens when Monse finally receives 100 percent of its founders’ creative attention?

Clues are already appearing. Recent collections have folded greater femininity into Monse’s deconstructed tailoring through lace, corsetry, sheer fabrics and eveningwear techniques. One bandeau was assembled from dismembered denim waistbands. A detachable shirt collar offered the effect of layered shirting without stuffing another full shirt beneath a sweater. Even Sperry’s boat shoe has been dragged into their universe and given a 2.75-inch platform sole.

Monse spent ten years sharing its designers with Oscar. Its second decade starts with the designers raising money, concentrating on one house and trying to stretch its wardrobe across more occasions and product categories. That makes the SS27 runway a business proposition disguised as fashion entertainment.

Public School is rebuilding from an even stranger position. Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne returned in February after seven years away from ready-to-wear, presenting 32 menswear looks. The startling part sits backstage: the comeback collection was essentially created by the two founders themselves, without a conventional design team or assistants.

That stripped-down restart accompanies a completely altered operating philosophy. Public School’s first life grew through wholesale, department store attention and rapid industry momentum. The new version is centered around direct-to-consumer business, selective wholesale and longer-term product building.

Chow has even embraced a concept that would once have sounded almost unfashionable: repetition. When a silhouette works, Public School now feels comfortable developing it through three or four seasons. His phrase, “repetition is reputation,” tells us plenty about what has changed. The runway itself is also described as one of the brand’s biggest annual expenditures, so every spectacular New York Fashion Week moment now has an ROI question sitting invisibly beside it.

February was intentionally about homecoming and old Public School codes. SS27 has been framed as the point where the designers show their “new New York.” That makes novelty surprisingly easy to measure. Look for the ideas you cannot immediately trace back to 2010s Public School.

Emerging Brands Are Doing Very Grown-Up Business

Magda Butrym arrives with another kind of pressure: American expansion. The United States has become the Polish label’s largest direct-to-consumer market, and a successful temporary New York store helped convince the company to commit properly.

Properly means approximately 4,300 square feet across three floors in SoHo, reportedly tied to a ten-year lease. Management has already discussed further opportunities in Miami, Los Angeles and Texas.

This is happening after Butrym became the first Polish designer to collaborate with H&M during its two decades of designer partnerships. The collection reportedly came close to selling out by noon on launch day. For a label whose visual vocabulary includes sculptural roses, Slavic femininity and increasingly specific references to Polish cinema, mass awareness appears capable of coexisting with cultural specificity.

SS27 will be Butrym’s first official fashion-week runway after previous Paris presentations, giving New York both a creative debut and an expensive American retail commitment to judge at once.

Zane Li graduated from FIT in 2023 and presented his first womenswear collection in 2024. Fashion Trust US says the business expanded fivefold during its first two years, with stockists stretching across markets including the United States, Italy, France, Japan, Korea, China, Australia and Canada.

Zane Li won the Karl Lagerfeld Prize 2026

2026 has turned into an award-season sweep. Fashion Trust US came first. Then a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist position. On September 4, Li won the Karl Lagerfeld Prize, worth €200,000 plus a year of LVMH mentorship. Ten days later, he shows at New York Fashion Week.

The clothes were developed before that cheque landed, which makes SS27 fascinating for a different reason. Everybody watching now knows what comes next could have considerably more infrastructure behind it. Li has already indicated that support will go toward team-building and operations. His formula of couture-like shapes, sportswear materials and intense color may stay recognizable while the machinery producing it grows up very quickly.

Conner Ives has already experienced what professionalizing a young fashion business can change. Before hiring management, he estimated that roughly 80 percent of his working time went toward business duties. Then came the £150,000 BFC/Vogue Designer Fashion Fund prize. Part of the money funded an experienced managing director, and the team subsequently cut its line sheet by more than half.

In other words, fewer products may have bought Ives more time to design.

His cultural relevance meanwhile exploded through the Protect the Dolls T-shirt, worn by Pedro Pascal, Troye Sivan, Donatella Versace and others while raising more than $600,000 for Trans Lifeline. Net-a-Porter is also preparing to carry the brand. His first New York runway therefore lands precisely as a cult London-based designer starts looking like a much more deliberately structured company.

Zaldy NY FW26 fitting

And then there is Zaldy, perhaps the strangest “new” name on the official calendar because he has already lived several fashion lives.

He presented eight namesake NYFW collections years ago, then spent almost two decades building an extraordinary costume career. He has three Emmys, has worked with RuPaul since 1992 and has designed for Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Pink, Cirque du Soleil and Victoria’s Secret. February brought his first menswear collection, a 26-look show at the Hotel Chelsea, where he had lived and worked for roughly 20 years.

Now comes the harder part. A stadium costume needs to create an unforgettable image. A fashion label needs customers who return next season and buy another jacket.

Come for the runways. Watch the companies underneath them. This New York Fashion Week may reveal its juiciest stories long before anyone starts arguing about hemlines.
