Tory Burch SS27: Opulence With a Strange Twist

The soundtrack from The Shining greeted guests inside Isamu Noguchi’s Sunken Garden on Pine Street. An eerie film score filled one of Manhattan’s great sculptural spaces, and Tory Burch was already enjoying the joke. Backstage, the designer described joy, optimism and escape as the emotions occupying her mind, with “opulent femininity” setting the collection’s creative direction alongside utility and American sportswear.

There were tiny bead-covered cardigans, enormous shark teeth hiding among necklaces, draped dresses slipping around the body, tie-dye covered in crystals, silk pretending to be feathers and a Lee Radziwill bag borrowing its silhouette from a paper shopping bag. Tory Burch SS27 had plenty of glamour. It also had jokes.

Tory Burch SS27 Gave Opulence a Personality

Tory Burch’s mind had travelled through mid-century glamour while developing the season, carrying forward ideas already visible in her recent collections. Spring 2027 pushed that fascination into an increasingly tactile world where surfaces appeared handled, embellished and full of character.

During World War II, silk and nylon supplies were directed toward military use, and women sometimes painted hosiery seams directly onto the backs of their legs to preserve the visual language of stockings. Burch referenced that resourceful relationship with dressing while thinking about escape and material pleasure. A painted line could create an illusion of luxury. Decades later, her SS27 runway played with illusion through silk feathers, crystal-covered dye effects and carefully engineered imperfection.

The silhouettes carried echoes of the 1940s through broad shoulders and high-waisted trousers, particularly in the pantsuits. Around them, Burch introduced pieces whose construction seemed charmingly temperamental. A coat dress tilted at the hem. Draped dresses appeared to loosen around the body. Everything suggested a wardrobe filled with objects that had already collected history, touch and personality.

Then came the granny cardigans.

At first glance, the bead-embroidered knitwear belonged to a familiar language of vintage femininity. Then the eye caught the proportions.

Tory Burch had shrunken the cardigans and rumpled their plackets, creating the impression of buttons landing slightly askew. The styling gave them the delicious energy of somebody dressing quickly from a treasured old wardrobe and heading straight into the city.

The necklaces offered an even better surprise.

Models wore sweet-looking multi-strand beads, and hidden among them were oversized shark teeth. Pearls and predator energy suddenly shared the same neckline. One tiny styling detail captured the humour running through Tory Burch SS27 beautifully: ladylike decoration could carry a bite.

These pieces also show how deeply Burch has leaned into surfaces during her current creative period. Embroidery, beads and tactile treatments have become vehicles for turning recognizable wardrobe staples into objects that demand a second inspection. A cardigan becomes a puzzle. A necklace becomes a small practical joke.

A Dress Looked Ready to Unravel

Draped dresses were specifically engineered to appear as though they were coming undone, creating folds and slips that suggested garments pulled from the depths of a closet or discovered in the back room of a particularly fabulous vintage shop. A coat dress carried that same attitude through its tilted hem.

Fabric has to land in exactly the right place for a dress to appear spontaneously displaced. That tension gave the collection much of its charm. Precision worked quietly underneath the surface while the clothes performed ease.

Then a tie-dyed dress covered in clusters of crystals pushed the idea somewhere brighter. Tie-dye brought swirling color across the body, and crystal deposits turned parts of the surface into concentrated points of light. The familiar craft language suddenly belonged at an evening event.

Those Feathers Were Actually Silk

One of the collection’s finest tricks waited inside the eveningwear.

Feathery textures decorated an evening jacket and appeared again as boas around several looks. The material was hand-painted silk, worked to create the visual impression of feathers.

The eye reads plumage first. The material tells another story. Paint and silk create volume, pattern and movement while keeping the textile rooted in Burch’s fascination with highly worked surfaces.

Nearby, a striped caftan was rendered in deep-pile chenille, giving another piece a rich tactile presence. Crystals caught light, chenille created depth, bead embroidery covered knitwear and painted silk performed its feather illusion. SS27 constantly invited the hand almost as strongly as the eye.

The workmanship also explains why the word “opulent” fits so neatly here. Opulence appeared through time spent on an object. Someone painted the silk. Someone worked the beads. Someone placed the crystals. Someone engineered that dress to fall at precisely the right strange angle.

The Lee Radziwill Bag Became a Paper Bag

The new Lee Radziwill shopper was shaped with the practical ease of a paper shopping bag, bringing utility directly into the accessories story. The bag had generous proportions and the casual familiarity of something designed to carry the day around with you.

Its name already carries an association with American society style through Lee Radziwill, and Spring 2027 gave that world a playful everyday object to inhabit.

The footwear moved in a deliciously decorative direction. Kitten-heel pumps came with asymmetrical vamps completely pavéd in microbeads, turning a relatively delicate shoe shape into another exercise in obsessive surface work.

A runway was having fun with itself.

Twenty-Two Years In, Tory Burch Is Playing

Tory Burch founded the company in 2004, and by 2026 the business had grown to 400+ stores worldwide with estimated annual revenue around $2 billion.

Industry recognition landed almost simultaneously. On September 9, the CFDA announced Burch as the recipient of its 2026 Positive Change Award, honoring her work through the Tory Burch Foundation, while she also received a nomination for American Womenswear Designer of the Year. The awards ceremony is scheduled for November 2 at the American Museum of Natural History.

The Foundation itself has distributed $100 million in low-interest loans to 5,600 women entrepreneurs, while its Fellows program has supported 500+ early-stage businesswomen. In 2026, its cohort reached 120 entrepreneurs selected from nearly 1,000 applications.

That enormous institutional chapter makes the playful confidence on the runway fascinating. Tory Burch has built scale, infrastructure and recognition. Spring 2027 finds her concentrating enormous creative energy on the pleasure of the strange detail.

Tory Burch SS27 leaves New York with the feeling that elegance has discovered a sense of humour, and Tory Burch seems to be having an excellent time telling us where to look.
