The scene appears a pale forest, rises behind the runway while rain cuts through the space. Against it, Grace Ling sends out women who carry darkness with unusual composure. Nothing needs to scream for attention. The mood stays low, controlled and faintly predatory, sensuality held close enough to the body that its danger only becomes apparent on a second look.

Ling titled the collection Oddities, beginning from her frustration with the pressure to define women through neat categories of masculine or feminine. Her answer was to let opposing qualities occupy the same body. Sensuality can carry force. Tailoring can expose skin. Romance can grow claws. “I wanted to show that you can be both at the same time,” she said backstage.

That duality sharpens the femme fatale Ling has been building for years. Her elongated claw-like nails remain, but Grace Ling SS27 gives the character another companion: the scorpion. It appears repeatedly across hardware and surface details, small enough to sit close to the body yet carrying an unmistakable threat. Within Oddities, the creature was conceived almost like a pet, part of a wider idea of beauty possessing its own defense mechanism.

A scorpion stays attached to its body, elegant and concealed until required. The same logic runs through Grace Ling SS27. Femininity carries its own sting.

Under a Darker Canopy

Even the weather accessories look capable of defending themselves.

Fans open into wing-like structures with pointed ribs, while umbrellas stretch taut surfaces over sharply arched frames until their familiar round canopy becomes almost skeletal. Their construction comes through rigid frameworks, tensioned surfaces and pointed geometry that turn familiar accessories into something sharper and almost skeletal. The black fan in particular recalls a bat wing, an accessory transformed into something hovering between etiquette and threat. The season also included talon forms and metallic botanical pieces, continuing Ling’s established vocabulary of objects poised between elegance and weaponry.

Against those hard outlines, the clothing turns softer. Silk slips skim downward in long uninterrupted columns, velvet adds a denser, nocturnal weight through the body, and sheer black layers temper the severity of tailored pieces without disturbing their elongated line. The materials move between fluidity and control, keeping the silhouette sensual while preserving that dark, composed restraint.

Above the body, the umbrellas sharpen that vertical pull. Narrow stems extend the figure upward before the canopy opens into a second plane, almost like a fragment of portable gothic architecture. Underneath, the long silhouettes stay calm and statuesque, allowing the tension between rigid accessory and yielding fabric to carry the image.

Ling’s femme fatale has come prepared for the rain. Protection just happens to look extraordinarily good in her hand.

Cold Metal, Warm Blood

Metal begins close to the body and gradually becomes part of its anatomy.

Grace Ling’s 3D-printed metalwork has long functioned as one of the house signatures, developed through the designer’s combination of digital fabrication and traditional pattern cutting. In Oddities, natural forms including leaves and scorpions, are translated into polished sculptural structures, allowing the shine to behave as hardware, jewelry and occasionally garment construction at once.

Silver sharpens the season’s restrained tailoring. Cropped proportions expose the stomach beneath jackets, while wide trousers pull the silhouette downward into a relaxed, almost liquid line. Elsewhere, fitted waists and long coats bring back the severe posture of gothic power dressing. Silk organza fades from pinstripe gray into black across parts of the collection, allowing a traditional suiting language to dissolve gradually into something more spectral.

Fabric yields around the body; silver holds its position. A sculpted component can cup, clamp or trace an anatomical point with no need to imitate the softness surrounding it. The hardware therefore carries real structural weight inside Ling’s silhouettes, occasionally taking over jobs usually performed by fabric.

The vampiric mood makes all that silver especially amusing. Folklore gives silver a much firmer reputation as a werewolf problem, so Ling’s vampires are technically safe. Still, the collection treats the metal like a controlled dose of danger: enough cold shine to catch the throat, waist or shoulder without cooling the seduction underneath.

The scorpion's armored shell turns defense into surface, while the sting remains inseparable from its beauty. Ling’s metallic vocabulary performs much the same trick.

Seduction in a Straight Line

Black fabric draws the body into longer, narrower lines.

Corseted shapes pull firmly through the torso before releasing into asymmetrical hems or trailing sheer panels, while halter constructions leave the shoulder exposed and allow fabric to gather lower around the hip. Other silhouettes move through a cleaner column, following the body with enough ease for the cloth to shift as the wearer walks.

The dresses narrow the body into long, controlled lines, often drawing attention toward the waist before releasing into asymmetric hems or trailing lengths. Halter shapes expose the shoulders, low necklines open the upper body, and draped sections gather lower around the hip, giving the silhouette a measured sensuality that never loses its composure.

Power dressing enters through posture: shoulders stay clean, waists narrow sharply, and wide trousers create a long base underneath cropped or fitted upper proportions. Grace Ling has said that construction quality and tailoring were areas she pushed substantially this season, an evolution visible in garments whose impact survives even after the sculptural metal is removed.

Ling’s femme fatale emerges most clearly through that restraint. The body remains visible, but the cut decides how much of it is revealed and where the eye is directed. Even at its most seductive, the silhouette keeps a certain severity, as though desire itself has been tailored into position.

Between Sin and Salvation

The closing stretch begins to scorch around the edges.

White cloth picks up brown and black gradients as though heat has passed directly through it, leaving sections of sheer fabric exposed beneath cleaner opaque surfaces. Burned-looking hems were deliberately worked into the collection, disturbing the purity of white with a controlled sense of decay.

Several silhouettes take on a faintly infernal quality through long extensions that trail from the hand or body like tails. The association never becomes a costume. A narrow white column, a deeply scooped neckline or a draped skirt keeps the body serene while one strange appendage shifts the image toward something more ambiguous. Saint and sinner start sharing the same outline.

Then white returns in its most ceremonial form.

The final look pairs a long draped skirt with a rigid silver raven structure across the upper body and head. Ling identified the raven as the sculptural subject of the finale, making the image more complicated than a straightforward angel. Wings may be present, but salvation remains uncertain.

The woman closing the show can appear angelic from across the room while carrying a dark bird directly against her body. Fluid white fabric descends in an almost classical column beneath a metallic form that refuses softness, setting purity against threat one final time.

The collection opened with Eve and forbidden fruit, a couture image Ling used to introduce “the danger of beauty.” It closes with another woman suspended between attraction and warning.

No halo required.

Grace Ling SS27 Keeps Beauty Dangerous

The scorpion may be the clearest emblem of the season because it condenses Ling’s argument into one small body. Its attraction and its defense system are inseparable. Remove the sting and something essential disappears with it.

Ling approaches femininity with the same refusal to separate softness from aggression. A fluid dress can carry a claw. Precise tailoring can expose the body. Metal can behave like both jewelry and skeleton. Romance never requires surrendering authority, while masculinity never has to erase sensuality.

Oddities also suggests a designer moving beyond the immediate spectacle of her sculptural pieces. Ling herself pointed to improved seams, construction and tailoring as markers of the brand’s development, and the quieter garments support that confidence. The metal still catches light, but the clothing underneath has become increasingly capable of holding the gaze on its own.

Her vampiric world has greater longevity. Darkness becomes atmosphere instead of costume, and the femme fatale gains an actual wardrobe around the fantasy.

She may carry a scorpion. She may carry an umbrella.

Either way, Grace Ling SS27 has already warned you to keep your distance.
