There are film costumes that become famous, and then there is Dorothy. Judy Garland blue gingham dress and ruby slippers in The Wizard of Oz have survived far beyond their 1939 screen appearance because the outfit is built from an unusually economical set of visual codes: powder blue checks, crisp white sleeves, a narrow waist, girlish braids and a pair of shoes bright enough to carry their own mythology.

Costume designer Adrian constructed the original Dorothy outfit as a blue-and-white gingham pinafore with a fitted bodice and full A-line skirt, worn over a cream organdy blouse with short sleeves, a high neckline and pale-blue rickrack around the collar and cuffs. One surviving screen-worn version even retains its handkerchief pocket and mother-of-pearl buttons.

That clear separation between pinafore and blouse is the first detail worth preserving in a modern recreation.

For the dress, ASTR The Label Wedelia Dress offers the more romantic interpretation. Its pale blue plaid seersucker, fitted boned bodice and long full skirt capture the freshness of Dorothy gingham while translating the farm-girl pinafore into a contemporary summer dress. Adjustable straps leave enough room to layer a white blouse underneath, and the defined waist keeps the silhouette close to the original.

The second route is Faithfull The Brand Laia Maxi Dress Sotto. Made in blue gingham cotton, the Laia Maxi Dress Sotto has a square neckline, slim straps, shirring through the bodice, a gathered waist and a softly expanding A-line skirt. Its ankle length pushes Dorothy into a more relaxed modern proportion, though the nostalgic blue check is remarkably effective once a white puff-sleeve blouse appears underneath.

The blouse is where the transformation becomes unmistakable. Ted Baker Elni Puff Sleeve Top has a clean crew neckline and rounded elbow-length puff sleeves, giving the layered dress the volume around the shoulders that defines the original costume. The surface stays plain white, which is useful here because Dorothy styling needs innocence and clarity more than decoration.

For a more romantic version, Patrizia Pepe Off-Shoulder Shirred Top introduces gathered cotton poplin, three-quarter puff sleeves and a ruffled peplum. The neckline is wider than the original Dorothy blouse, yet the shirring and sleeve volume create a charming prairie quality beneath blue gingham. Wear the neckline higher on the shoulders and allow only the sleeves and upper chest to remain visible underneath the dress.

Then come the shoes, because Dorothy ultimately belongs to the ruby slippers.

The film pair began as commercially manufactured white silk and leather pumps. MGM craftspeople dyed them red, covered them with sequined fabric and added stiff bows decorated with rhinestones and bugle beads. The Smithsonian pair carries roughly 2,400 sequins on each shoe, turning an otherwise simple pump into one of Hollywood most recognizable objects.

Jimmy Choo Elisa 45 Glitter Leather Mary Jane Pumps translate that sparkle beautifully. Ruby-red glitter covers the shoe, while a low block heel and Mary Jane fastening keep the silhouette charming and wearable. The square toe is more contemporary than the rounded original, yet the combination of red glitter, strap and modest heel captures the essential idea immediately.

For a more fashion-forward Dorothy, choose Simone Rocha Ghillie Glitter Ballet Flats. The red glitter fabric, rounded toe and elaborate ghillie ties exchange the original heel for a ballet flat shape with plenty of romantic eccentricity. Simone Rocha is especially fitting here because the label frequently treats girlhood, ribbons and embellished footwear with the same seriousness that makes Dorothy enduring as a fashion reference.

xMore than eight decades later, Dorothy still proves that a costume can become iconic through three simple ingredients: one memorable pattern, one unmistakable color accent and a silhouette clear enough to recognize before the face even comes into focus.
