VS Makes Wearable High Jewelry: Lingerie, Studded, Not Laced
The bra, one of the most intimate items of clothing, makes the best spectacle for high jewelry. For three decades, Victoria’s Secret has explored this extravagant possibility through its legendary Fantasy Bra. With its spectacular return in 2026, the Fantasy Bra continues to challenge the boundaries between luxury craftsmanship, fashion spectacle, and the enduring fascination with extraordinary wealth.

Why did Victoria's Secret have to put high jewelry on underwear in the first place? How did the brand create a piece of lingerie become more valuable than a mansion, a rare automobile, or an extraordinary diamond necklace?
Diamond-Studded Lingerie As A Christmas Gift
The Victoria’s Secret Fantasy Bra was born in 1996, when German supermodel Claudia Schiffer modelled the Million Dollar Miracle Bra, valued at $1 million. At a time when the lingerie brand was expanding its influence over popular culture, the concept introduced an entirely new marketing proposition: transforming an everyday garment into an object of extraordinary high jewelry with magnificent financial and symbolic value.
Contrary to its subsequent association with the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, the Fantasy Bra initially existed as a promotional feature within the brand's holiday campaigns and catalogues. These early creations were conceived as extravagant Christmas gifts, their astronomical prices attracting publicity far beyond the possibility of an actual purchase.
The transformation into a runway phenomenon occurred in 2001, when Heidi Klum appeared wearing the Heavenly Star Fantasy Bra, valued at $12.5 million. Adorned with 1,200 pink sapphires and a spectacular 90-carat diamond, it established the annual Fantasy Bra reveal as one of the show's defining spectacles.
Over subsequent years, the Fantasy Bra evolved into a symbol of professional prestige among Victoria’s Secret Angels. Its presentation became an anticipated moment within the fashion calendar, uniting elaborate runway production with the extraordinary material value traditionally associated with high jewelry.
The Multimillion-Dollar Icons of High Jewelry
The early 2000s represented the height of the Fantasy Bra's extravagance, when seven- and eight-figure valuations became integral to the brand's theatrical identity.
In 2000, Gisele Bündchen modelled the Red Hot Fantasy Bra, a ruby-and-diamond creation valued at $15 million. Its remarkable price placed it among the most expensive fashion items ever sold in the public imagination, although the figure represented an advertised valuation, not a confirmed sale. The ensemble became an enduring emblem of turn-of-the-millennium excess.
The Very Sexy Fantasy Bra, worn by Heidi Klum in 2003, continued the tradition with an $11 million valuation and a 70-carat Excelsior diamond. Two years later, Gisele Bündchen returned to the Sexy Splendor Fantasy Bra, an elaborate composition incorporating thousands of diamonds, rubies, and a 101-carat central diamond.
Other landmark creations included the $10 million Royal Fantasy Bra worn by Candice Swanepoel in 2013, featuring a dramatic ruby centrepiece, and the paired Dream Angels Fantasy Bras presented by Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio in 2014. The latter marked the first occasion on which Victoria’s Secret presented two Fantasy Bras simultaneously, each valued at approximately $2 million.

These creations established a distinctive form of luxury spectacle, in which jewellery valuation became as central to the narrative as the models, designers, and runway presentations.
The Master Jewellers Behind the Fantasy
Although Victoria’s Secret provided the creative platform, the Fantasy Bra's extraordinary material complexity depended upon specialist jewellers whose expertise lay in precision stone-setting, precious-metal construction, and bespoke design.
Among the most influential collaborators was Mouawad, whose relationship with Victoria’s Secret began in 2001. The house contributed numerous celebrated creations, including the Very Sexy Fantasy Bra, Royal Fantasy Bra, Fireworks Fantasy Bra, and Champagne Nights Fantasy Bra.
Other prominent collaborators included Harry Winston for the 1997 Diamond Dream Bra, Martin Katz for the 2008 Black Diamond Fantasy Miracle Bra, and Damiani for the 2009 and 2010 editions. Designer Eddie Borgo worked with A.W. Mouzannar on the 2016 Bright Night Fantasy Bra, featuring diamonds and emeralds mounted in 18-karat gold.
Each collaboration required the adaptation of techniques associated with luxury craftsmanship to an unconventional wearable structure.
Unlike traditional necklaces or bracelets, these pieces needed to accommodate movement across the torso. Gemstone arrangements had to follow complex anatomical curves, while metal frameworks required sufficient stability to support substantial weight without compromising their visual elegance.
The technical challenges became particularly demanding when individual gemstones numbered in the thousands. The 2018 Dream Angels Fantasy Bra, created by Atelier Swarovski for Elsa Hosk, incorporated more than 2,100 Swarovski-created diamonds and responsibly sourced topaz. Its construction required over 930 hours of work and masterful luxury craftsmanship.
Beyond dazzling visual extravagance, the Fantasy Bra became an unusual meeting point between garment construction and the highly specialised disciplines of high jewelry.
The $50 Million Comeback: High Jewelry Reimagined in 2026
After its final appearance in 2018, the Fantasy Bra remained absent even when the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show returned in 2024. The Fantasy Bra's return on October 18, 2026, introduced the most valuable edition in the brand's history.
Worn by Kylie Jenner, the $50 million creation was conceived by Jacob & Co., under founder Jacob Arabo. At its centre sat a 75.54-carat radiant-cut Fancy Vivid yellow diamond, surrounded by 4,410 natural diamonds in seven different cuts.
The design represented a remarkable feat of jewellery engineering. Crafted entirely from precious metal and diamonds, without conventional textile fabric, it incorporated 3,218 individually designed components. A team of 15 specialists devoted more than 1,000 hours to its creation, producing an articulated structure that could accommodate the movement of the body while weighing nearly four pounds.

The piece also reflected Jacob & Co.'s fascination with technically ambitious jewellery. Drawing inspiration from the house's Rare Touch collection, its construction combined intricate metal articulation with gemstone arrangements designed to respond dynamically to light and movement.
The 2026 Fantasy Bra surpassed the previous $15 million benchmark established by the Red Hot Fantasy Bra. It also signalled a significant cultural shift. By selecting Kylie Jenner, Victoria’s Secret expanded the Fantasy Bra's traditional association with supermodels to include a celebrity entrepreneur whose influence spans beauty, fashion, and digital culture. The debate about this shift is discussed further in: The Fantasy Lives On at Victoria's Secret 2026.
Were Fantasy Bras Ever Actually Sold?
Despite their staggering valuations, the commercial history of the Fantasy Bra reveals an intriguing contradiction.
Originally advertised through Victoria’s Secret's holiday catalogues, these creations were ostensibly available for purchase. However, confirmed private sales have been exceptionally rare, and the pieces were principally conceived as promotional spectacles.
Many earlier designs were reportedly dismantled after their campaigns, allowing valuable gemstones to be recovered and repurposed. Consequently, their advertised prices should be distinguished from realised auction or retail transactions.
This distinction becomes especially important when comparing Fantasy Bras with the most expensive fashion items ever sold. The celebrated $15 million valuation of the 2000 Red Hot Fantasy Bra, for example, represented an asking price rather than a documented transaction.
Guinness World Records has historically recognised Victoria’s Secret creations for their extraordinary value, although different records and historical accounts distinguish the Red Hot ensemble from the 2001 Heavenly Star Bra. The latter appears in Guinness's published record for the most valuable bra.
Their true commercial achievement lay in a different form of value creation: transforming extraordinary jewels into publicity, cultural recognition, and an enduring association with luxury.

The Cultural Legacy of the Fantasy Bra
The Fantasy Bra remains one of fashion's most distinctive experiments in extravagance. Its combination of exceptional gemstones, meticulous luxury craftsmanship, and celebrity spectacle captured the aspirations of an era fascinated by wealth made visible.
Yet its evolution also reveals changing attitudes towards luxury. The increasingly restrained valuations of the late 2010s reflected an industry reconsidering its relationship with conspicuous consumption, while the 2026 revival embraced extraordinary opulence within a culture driven by digital visibility.
The Fantasy Bra has always occupied an unusual territory between commercial fantasy and genuine jewellery artistry. Its financial value commands attention, but its enduring fascination comes from the improbable transformation of lingerie into an elaborate work of high jewelry.
