Born in Vienna in 1939, Heidi Morawetz built her reputation through image-making before becoming one of Chanel’s most important beauty figures. She worked with major fashion photographers including Guy Bourdin, Helmut Newton, Bruce Weber, Patrick Demarchelier, Sarah Moon, and David Bailey, which gave her a strong understanding of how makeup behaves under light, camera pressure, skin texture, and editorial mood. That experience became essential to her later product work, because Chanel makeup needed to serve both the runway and the close-up.

Before Chanel, Morawetz also worked in the Yves Saint Laurent beauty world, where she helped develop the house’s first makeup line in the late 1970s. Fashion houses were beginning to treat makeup as a serious brand extension, and Morawetz understood the bridge between couture image and cosmetic formula. She could read a designer’s visual universe, then translate it into lipstick, complexion, nail color, and backstage direction.

Her most influential period came at Chanel, where Heidi Morawetz worked alongside Dominique Moncourtois for nearly three decades. Together, they shaped Chanel’s makeup creation studio and helped define the house’s beauty language through controlled elegance, precise color, and products that carried the authority of the runway.

Rouge Noir remains the clearest example of her impact. The dark red-black nail color was developed from backstage experimentation for a Chanel runway show and later became one of the house’s most recognizable beauty products. Heidi Morawetz helped prove that nail color could operate with the same cultural force as a handbag, perfume, or couture silhouette.

Le Blanc de Chanel also belongs to her legacy because it reflects another side of Chanel beauty: light, skin preparation, and the architecture of complexion. While Rouge Noir showed her instinct for color as attitude, Le Blanc de Chanel showed her understanding of makeup as surface control. Both products reveal the same professional intelligence.

Heidi Morawetz retired from Chanel in 2008, closing a long creative chapter at the house, yet her influence continued through Rouge Noir, Le Blanc de Chanel, Chanel’s beauty archive, and the later structure of its makeup direction.
