A trained fine artist who once illustrated for Versace, Moschino launched his house in 1983 with an unusual contradiction at its centre. The clothes could be beautifully tailored while openly mocking luxury, status and fashion’s obsession with novelty.

A jacket carried “Waist of Money” where a belt should sit. A pristine suit acquired silverware and a napkin. His Spring 1992 “FashiON/OFF” ensemble treated fashion like a light switch that could simply be flicked off. The Metropolitan Museum of Art places that humour within a distinctly postmodern, camp sensibility, while his parodies regularly targeted houses including Chanel, Louis Vuitton and Yves Saint Laurent.
