Five years after establishing his own jewelry brand, Alex Moss's reputation has steadily grown through custom diamond pieces for celebrities and hip-hop artists. This field continues to be his passion, as on June 11, the architect of modern luxury introduced the “Self Portrait” - his latest bespoke creation dedicated to Takashi Murakami - via Instagram. As the name suggests, this one-of-a-kind pavé diamond chain recreated the image of the Japanese artist and his definitive visual style, perfectly demonstrating the intersection of high-end jewelry craftsmanship and contemporary fine art.

Self Portrait

Even at a glance, the central pendant captivates with its sparkle and exquisite design. On it, Alex Moss formed a self-portrait of Takashi Murakami, precisely replicating his appearance, from his round face, thick beard, smiling eyes to his distinctive eyeglasses. This “Self Portrait” is shaped through the pavé arrangement of shimmering diamonds. Here, the craftsman places small diamonds closely to create the illusion of a seamless surface, allowing those shining pieces to catch light from every angle regardless of the viewing direction. According to Hypebeast, the “Self Portrait” "captures the artist’s unique look with crazy detailing embedded directly into the precious metalwork”.

Above Takashi Murakami's sparkling facial portrait is his 31-year-old Flowers motif. This symbolic smiling flower was created in 1995, while Murakami was studying Nihonga at the Tokyo University of the Arts. Taking inspiration from “setsugetsuka” - a core theme in Nihonga art, meaning moon, snow and flower, he attempted to recreate traditional Nihonga flowers more than fifty times. And from that, the Flower motif was born. Contrary to its flamboyant appearance, this symbol carries a deeper meaning: it represents the pain and collective profound emotions of the Japanese people following the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

Self Portrait

Since then, Murakami’s Flower motif has spread throughout the world, appearing in many fields, including fashion. It features on Ben Baller jewelry, a Tourbillon watch, and now the “Self Portrait”. The iconic smiling characters are depicted using a series of vibrant rainbow gemstones, showcasing a bright, multi-colored constrast. Combining with Takashi Murakami's cheerful facial portrait, the Flower motif creates a piece of jewelry that evokes joy just by looking at it. Another notable part of the “Self Portrait” is the accompanying custom chain. Featuring pavé diamonds that harmonize perfectly with the artist's playful pop-art style, it creates a flawless representation of his visual universe.

Self Portrait

The meticulous craftsmanship resulted in the exquisite “Self Portrait”, with every detail tributing to Takashi Murakami’s distinctive visual style. This highlights a philosophy in luxury design: jewelry is not only an item to wear, but also a statement of the wearer's personality.
