CK One Essence arrived with a difficult task: update one of the most recognizable fragrances of the 1990s without stripping away the cultural logic that made it important. The original CK One was never only a fresh scent. It was a generational signal, tied to minimalism, youth culture, black-and-white casting, shared identity, and the idea that fragrance could step outside traditional masculine and feminine codes.

Thirty years later, Calvin Klein returned to that formula with a version designed for a consumer who still understands freshness, but now expects more concentration, longer wear, cleaner design language, and stronger ingredient storytelling.

Calvin Klein brought back master perfumer Alberto Morillas, the perfumer behind the original CK One, giving the new launch a direct creative link to the 1994 fragrance. This detail was important because it positioned the release as a continuation from inside the fragrance’s own history, not a disconnected anniversary product.

The composition kept the fresh structure central to the CK One universe. Italian bergamot and blood orange gave the opening a brighter citrus force, while a heart of teas, including organic green tea, maintained the clean aromatic character that consumers associate with the line. In the base, sandalwood and upcycled musk added warmth and sensuality, giving CK One Essence a more rounded finish. This made the fragrance feel familiar in direction, yet more polished in weight and texture.

The campaign also worked as a statement of continuity. Calvin Klein partnered with Alasdair McLellan for imagery built around movement, individuality, togetherness, and the brand’s long-standing black-and-white visual code. The use of New Order’s “Blue Monday” connected the campaign to music culture and youth energy, two forces that have always been central to CK One’s identity. For fragrance marketing, this mattered because the relaunch needed to speak across memory and newness at the same time.

Calvin Klein used CK One Essence to argue that the spirit of CK One still had room to evolve: shared, fresh, youthful, direct, but now stronger, more refined, and built for a new fragrance market.
