Rick Owens SS27: Softness at the Edge of Brutality

Rick Owens SS27 stands at the uneasy point where a signature can look eternal one season and habitual the next. The silhouettes are recognisable almost before they fully come into view. Rick Owens has reached a peculiar privilege in fashion. His clothes barely need a label anymore. Years of elongated bodies, brutal volumes, ruined surfaces and near-religious severity have built one of the industry’s most complete visual worlds, so complete that recognition now comes almost instantly.

STONE, his Spring 2027 collection, works inside that familiarity instead of chasing a dramatic rupture. The setting remained monumental, with models crossing the Palais de Tokyo above water and fountains, yet the bodies moving through it carried a quieter conviction. FW26 had pushed its women toward something almost lethal through Kevlar columns and engulfing coats. SS27 retains verticality but loosens its emotional pressure.

It also makes one question harder to ignore. When a designer has spent decades perfecting his own language, how many times can the same sentence be rewritten before we start anticipating the ending?

Rick Owens SS27 and the Column That Refuses to Leave

Rick Owens has long known how much authority can be contained in one uninterrupted vertical line. For SS27, the body is stretched again into columns that meet the floor with almost ecclesiastical gravity, shoulders widening above them as if the clothes belonged to some private order of ceremonial dress.

Only months earlier, FW26 had approached a related silhouette through Kevlar, turning its women into figures prepared for resistance. Spring changes the emotional weight. Heavy double duchesse constructed from upcycled industrial webbing still carries the severity expected from Owens, yet the body no longer appears braced for impact. Its stillness reads as composure. What had been defensive became stoic.

Broad surfaces fall with a controlled density, while long hems refuse the distraction of excessive construction. Owens gives the eye remarkably little to hold onto beyond proportion, posture and the slow movement of cloth. Ornament would disturb the discipline. Instead, the woman seem almost carved into their garments, elongated until fashion approaches statuary.

Such restraint introduces another version of Rick Owens glamour. His darkness has often depended on threat, distortion or physical extremity. Here, severity can remain beautiful without becoming violent. The column stands with the calm of something that no longer needs to prove its strength.

When Brutality Learns to Float

Air passes through SS27 in ways Rick Owens rarely allowed it to dominate. Parachute silk expands around the body, catching movement before collapsing back toward the figure, while sweeping trapeze volumes replace the sense of enclosure found in heavier constructions. One gown uses metres of parachute silk specifically to respond to the air around it.

Rick’s scale remains enormous, though gravity has loosened its hold. Fabric can hover instead of armour, and the body appears to move through space without carrying the full burden of the garment above it. The effect is unexpectedly graceful, almost devotional, but still far removed from conventional romanticism. Softness enters his universe without asking darkness to leave.

Perspex wedges and crystal-strapped sandals replace much of the massive platform weight associated with Owens, bringing flashes of transparency and glamour close to the ground. The models no longer need to conquer the runway with every step. Their movement has quieter assurance.

SS27 finds elegance inside restraint: severe silhouettes can breathe, transparent surfaces can coexist with industrial weight, and glamour can flicker through a collection without disturbing its stoicism. Rick Owens has discovered how much force can remain after the volume is turned down.

Rick Owens Comes Down to Earth

Sulfur-dyed denim pulls the procession toward a recognisable wardrobe. Tunics, flared trousers and cropped jackets introduce clothes whose familiarity initially seems almost foreign inside a world accustomed to monuments, ceremonial gowns and bodily distortion.

Cropped jackets interrupt the torso high above its expected endpoint, while long trousers preserve the verticality running through the show without requiring floor-length drama. Denim keeps its everyday character even after Owens stretches and redirects it, grounding his elongated bodies in something connected to ordinary dressing.

Rick’s design language often associate with extreme scale, yet a wardrobe cannot live entirely at the level of spectacle. Here, the same discipline moves through pieces capable of slipping closer to daily life. Their strangeness is carried through cut and proportion instead of monumental volume.

Glossy leather outerwear occupies the space between those worlds. Internal straps allow oversized jackets to hang across the shoulders like wings temporarily folded behind the body, turning a functional construction into a subtle extension of the collection’s angelic imagery. Mythology remains present, though it has come much closer to street level.

Rick Owens SS27 is not only visible in flowing fabric. It appears in Rick allowing his world to accommodate an ordinary garment without swallowing it whole.

Where the Body Stops Being Human

The final figures seem to have evolved beyond clothing altogether.

Tulle and elastic expand around the skin in soft anatomical formations, some trailing outward with the restless reach of tentacles, others curling into rounded chambers that recall shells. Rick Owens described these constructions as his version of a delicate negligee, developed from the leather, rubber and foam exoskeletons of his SS27 menswear. Yet their delicacy only makes the mutation stranger.

Across the sequence, those two anatomies gradually begin to meet. Fluid extensions wrap around harder, enclosed volumes; softness acquires structure while shell-like forms seem capable of growing limbs. By the closing looks, separating octopus from mollusc almost misses the point. Rick has fused them into something with no obvious natural equivalent.

It is tempting to see that creature as the latest inhabitant of a universe Owens has spent decades constructing. His work has repeatedly pushed the human figure toward saint, warrior, alien, monument and monster, while collection names such as Cyclops, Sphinx, Faun and Mastodon have long placed mythology, animality and bodily transformation close to the centre of his language. His official runway archive makes that lineage unusually visible.

SS27 almost lets that long obsession reproduce on its own. The human body remains visible underneath, but it no longer dictates the anatomy around it. Tulle grows a skeleton, elastic behaves like connective tissue, and volume develops organs that seem to belong to another species.

After years of building what has become something close to a cult around the Rick Owens body, perhaps the inevitable next step was for that cult to grow its own creature.

When a Signature Knows Itself Too Well

Rick Owens has encountered a problem most designers spend their careers trying to acquire. We know him.

A long silhouette appears at a distance and authorship can already be guessed. Extreme proportion, a ruined surface, a body transformed into architecture, the vocabulary has become so complete that recognition happens almost instinctively. SS27 makes that achievement unusually visible because so much of the collection is beautifully resolved. The columns have authority. The floating gowns give his severity another temperature. Denim proves that his proportions survive outside ceremony. None suggests creative exhaustion.

Yet beauty and surprise are separate currencies.

Place SS27 beside FW26 and the question becomes harder to avoid. Material changes from Kevlar and heavier protective constructions toward webbing, denim, parachute silk and tulle, while the emotional register moves from ferocity toward elegant stoicism. The silhouette itself often travels familiar ground. At some point, refinement asks the audience to become fascinated by increasingly minute shifts inside forms they already know.

Perhaps that is the price of becoming Rick Owens.

Designers without a powerful signature spend years searching for one. Designers who succeed eventually face the opposite problem: how to escape the certainty they created without destroying the world people came to them for. Rick Owens has reached the stage where changing too much could look like abandoning himself, while changing too little risks turning ritual into routine.

Rick Owens SS27 still holds attention because the quieter moments suggest movement beneath the surface. Yet future seasons may need to disturb that certainty more aggressively. Not because the column has exhausted its beauty, but because Rick Owens has already taught us how to recognise it.

The danger begins when recognition gets there before curiosity.
