High-end hospitality has seen many exciting luxury hotel opening dates in Spring and Summer of 2026. A new candidate for the best luxury hotels has emerged for this year's autumn and winter travelling season in Matsumoto, the city of music, mythos and mountaintops.
On August 4, 2026, KAI Matsumoto reopened after a property-wide architectural and conceptual transformation. Its new identity starts with Matsumoto itself, a city whose cultural character is often condensed into a linguistic coincidence known as the “Three Gakus.”
Three different Japanese kanji share the pronunciation gaku: 学, meaning learning; 岳, referring to mountains; and 楽, associated with music. Together, they describe a city shaped by academic culture, framed by the Japanese Alps and deeply connected to musical craftsmanship.
The lobby now rises into a 10-metre acoustic atrium designed around live performance. Timber, musical instruments and references to local lutherie establish the physical language of the space, while nightly “Sonority Concerts” bring chamber and string music into the centre of the hotel.
The same idea extends upstairs. Its “GAKU no Ma” regional rooms include vinyl players and high-quality audio equipment, turning listening into part of the stay itself. For guests comparing the best luxury hotels in Japan, this degree of cultural specificity gives KAI Matsumoto an identity difficult to reproduce elsewhere.
The dining room introduces an equally unconventional decision. Traditional kaiseki has been replaced with Italian cuisine designed around Shinshu wine.
Italian food offers a particularly flexible structure for wine pairing because olive oil, acidity, herbs and restrained sauces can interact with lighter, aromatic cool-climate wines without overwhelming them. That makes it well suited to Nagano, where vineyards at higher elevations produce bottles shaped by pronounced temperature differences and relatively cool growing conditions.

Beneath the new cultural layers sits something much older. Asama Onsen historically served as a Goten-yu, or palace bath, associated with the lords of Matsumoto Castle. KAI Matsumoto preserves this heritage through eight bathing styles and thirteen variations, including open-air hinoki baths, warming baths and reclining baths.
