Olivia Rodrigo has already spent much of 2026 turning clothes into part of her pop narrative. In May, a floral babydoll dress worn during her Barcelona performance became an online flashpoint, reviving conversations around the silhouette’s history in riot grrrl, kinderwhore dressing and the tension between girlhood and rebellion. The look quickly became one of the defining fashion images of her current era, while the babydoll itself continued appearing across her performances and fan culture.
The Chalayan dress takes that relationship between clothing and performance somewhere more literal. Transformation has run through his work for decades, from garments buried underground to decay to mechanical dresses and his Fall 2000 coffee table that was converted into a skirt. Clothing in his universe can move, disappear and change the state as part of the design itself.
On Rodrigo’s stage, that history gains a new narrative. The dissolving white layer turns the word “unraveled” into a physical event, linking the tour title, the song and the costume in a single reveal.
Nearly eleven years after Chalayan sent melting clothes down the runway, the experiment has found a second life in pop performance through Olivia Rodrigo.
