Trend data for Fall 2026 points toward makeup that looks darker, smudged and deliberately lived in. Tired-looking undone makeup is up 214% in searches, while indie-sleaze makeup has gained 80% in social buzz. Burgundy fits inside that shift because it already looks slightly worn-in before anyone even smudges it.

This is where burgundy eye shadow becomes more than another autumn color. Its rise is happening alongside a larger appetite for eye makeup that looks emotionally charged.

Fashion Month Put Red Back Around the Eyes

Across fashion week locations, red pigment appeared around the eye in several registers: bloodshot, scarlet, plum, wine, brown-red and almost-black Bordeaux.

In New York, Collina Strada Fall 2026 pushed red toward something much rawer. Dick Page built deliberately bloodshot-looking eyes for The World Is a Vampire, smearing color below the lash line until the makeup looked exhausted and feral.

The traditional smoky eye depends heavily on black, charcoal and brown. Burgundy eye shadow keeps the same depth while introducing visible color inside the darkness. That small change alters the entire mood.

A matte burgundy can look grungy and almost bruised. A satin wine shade catches red as the face moves. Metallic burgundy can flash garnet, copper or black cherry. Smudged underneath the eye, the pigment creates the impression that yesterday’s makeup survived until morning.

At the 2026 Met Gala, makeup artist Tami El Sombati gave Alysa Liu a deep warm burgundy eye, using dark red pigment around the lashes to create one of the evening’s clearest wine-colored makeup moments.

Zoë Kravitz also wore a soft maroon smoky eye during the night, helping turn the shade into a recurring red-carpet color instead of a single editorial experiment.

Then Samantha Morton delivered one of the season’s most literal examples at The Odyssey premiere. Makeup artist Mary Wiles started with black kohl and blended Dior’s Diorshow On Stage Crayon in Plum through it, matching Morton's burgundy Maison Margiela gown with a hazy wine eye.

That technique captures the Fall 2026 formula beautifully: black gives the eye depth, while the burgundy supplies the actual character.

Zendaya also moved into the family earlier in the year with brown-and-burgundy smoky eye makeup in Rome, another indication that wine-toned eye color is becoming comfortable territory for high-profile makeup artists.

Bobbi Brown published an official Smokey Burgundy Eye look in March 2026, using its Long-Wear Cream Shadow Stick to frame burgundy as an easy smoky-eye option.

Dior Fall 2026 Lucky Clover approached the color through rosewood. Peter Philips created the Lucky Rosewood look with intense reddish-brown eyes using the limited-edition Diorshow 5 Couleurs 883 palette.

Pat McGrath’s limited-edition Louis Vuitton Monogram Infrarouge LV Ombres palette makes the case especially clear, placing a “mysterious, velvety burgundy” beside taupe and anthracite as a luxury smoky-eye neutral.

Across the wider market, Bordeaux pencils, burgundy mascaras, plum crayons and wine-colored cream shadows now give consumers several ways into the same family.

Burgundy Eye Shadow Is Being Worn Like Makeup After Midnight

Fall 2026 is giving burgundy eye shadow very little interest in behaving politely.

The strongest application is diffused, slightly irregular and concentrated around the lash line. Black pencil can sit underneath it. Brown can soften the edges. Burgundy can then be pressed over the center or swept below the eye until the three colors become difficult to separate.

Skin around it stays comparatively fresh. Heavy foundation plus wine shadow can push the face toward costume. Luminous skin lets the burgundy remain strange, sensual and current.
