Onitsuka Tiger SS27: The Shoes Know the Route

At Onitsuka Tiger SS27, the road starts from the ground up. The shoes speak with the confidence of a house that knows its strongest language by heart, while the wardrobe above is still learning how to make that language its own.

Onitsuka Tiger SS27 is built around the idea of an “ENERGY STATION”, a temporary crossroads where travelers, cultures and lifestyles meet, recharge and move on. The metaphor suits a brand currently stretching well beyond the athletic origins that first made its name. Tailoring now sits beside sportswear, delicate surfaces collide with utility, and motorcycle culture pulls into a wardrobe already crowded with traces of Western Americana and urban dressing. The brand itself describes the collection through the fusion of tailoring and sportswear, while positioning the season as another step toward its identity as a luxury lifestyle label.

That ambition gives Andrea Pompilio a more difficult task than producing attractive runway clothes. Onitsuka Tiger already owns an extraordinarily recognisable footwear vocabulary. The Tiger Stripe can identify a shoe before the rest of the silhouette comes into focus. Expanding that clarity across an entire wardrobe requires more than styling sneakers beneath fashion.

SS27 gets surprisingly close, although not every part of the collection travels at the same speed.

Route 66, But Without Costume

The romance of the American road runs through the collection without demanding a cowboy hat at every turn. Fringe trails from lightweight dresses, earthier surfaces meet sharper urban pieces, while the looseness of Western dressing is repeatedly interrupted by sportswear proportions and technical details. The collection places Western influence alongside silk fringe, ribbon treatments and lightweight dresses, folded into a season built around cultural intersections rather than one fixed character.

Western imagery carries an enormous visual history in fashion, often collapsing quickly into nostalgia once suede, fringe and prairie references gather in the same place. Pompilio breaks that continuity. Athletic socks appear where polished boots might have completed the fantasy. Colour can turn deliberately awkward. A garment carrying the romance of roadside America may sit beside something rooted in workwear or sport.

The Energy Station conceit helps explain the mismatches. Travelers passing through the same petrol stop do not arrive dressed from one wardrobe. Someone has come from the city, another from somewhere dustier, another still looks ready to climb back onto a motorcycle. Their clothes briefly share the same fluorescent light before diverging again.

When the road remains an atmosphere, not a costume department. The brand has no need to convince anyone it suddenly owns Western heritage. Instead, it borrows the freedom attached to that mythology, the possibility of leaving, arriving and changing identity somewhere between the two.

The Shoes Are Doing More Than Walking

Footwear carries a different level of confidence.

Onitsuka Tiger SS27 treats them as a moment to extend the category from which the brand was born, unveiling a newly evolved Tiger Stripe alongside expanded interpretations of its established shoe vocabulary. The MEXICO X66 moves into a mule, while lace-up heeled boots rise to the knee or stop around the calf. Chunkier vintage pumps, relaxed loafers and metallic pointed styles push the same visual DNA into territories far removed from the classic low-profile sneaker.

What makes the group convincing is not the number of shoe types, but rather the transformation happens without severing recognition.

A Tiger Stripe climbing tall boot carries different associations from one crossing a slim sneaker, yet the eye still reads Onitsuka Tiger. Familiar sporting lines acquire sensuality when raised onto a heel. Lace-up constructions exaggerate the calf, while metallic surfaces and vintage proportions move the brand closer to fashion without disguising where the idea started.

Sports-rooted brands can become strangely apologetic when entering fashion, covering athletic heritage beneath tailoring and luxury signifiers as though technical origins need to be outgrown. Adrea Pompilio treats those origins as capital.

The shoe no longer waits until the outfit is finished. It establishes proportion, attitude and often the entire character above it.

Even the newly redrawn Onitsuka Tiger Stripe carries a larger strategic implication. The company presents it as a contemporary evolution of a code that has defined the brand for decades, designed to connect heritage with its next phase. On the runway, that evolution becomes easier to grasp and brand identity survives when the object changes.

Perhaps footwear receives the strongest response precisely because this is the territory where Onitsuka Tiger has nothing to prove. Expertise creates freedom. Pompilio can make the shoe stranger, taller or dressier because a strong historical foundation keeps the experiment anchored.

The rest of SS27 spends much of its time trying to acquire that same certainty.

Honda Pulls Into the Energy Station

Motorcycle culture gives the Energy Station movement beyond metaphor. Onitsuka Tiger’s collaboration with Honda brought the Wing Mark across apparel, footwear and accessories while a concept motorcycle, the Onitsuka Tiger Honda Mid Sports Concept, appeared as the project’s mechanical counterpart.

On clothing, racing language becomes lighter than the protective equipment that inspires it. Mesh and jersey reinterpret motorcycle graphics and silhouettes, while technical references sit against the more relaxed styling running through the collection. Honda’s Wing Mark appears across boots, caps, shirts and socks, extending the collaboration through the wardrobe.

The pairing has an almost obvious logic, but obvious ideas can still produce useful tension. Onitsuka Tiger began with the foot in motion. Honda builds machines around movement. Both emerged in Japan at nearly the same historical moment, with Onitsuka founded in 1949 and Honda in 1948. Mobility gives their shared language more substance than a logo exchange alone.

Placed beside the Western references, motorcycle culture also changes the meaning of the road. Romantic wandering gains speed and machinery. Fringe can suggest movement caused by wind; racing graphics bring movement engineered by acceleration. One belongs to mythology, the other to performance.

Onitsuka SS27 is stronger when motorcycle culture moves beneath the branding, into proportion, fabric and functionality. Mesh carries the physical logic of racing gear. Technical panels redirect the body. Utility can remain visible even after the garment leaves the track. At those moments, Honda becomes part of the collection’s grammar instead of a stamp on top of it.

Can Clothes Keep Up With Shoes?

Away from tall boots, racing graphics and the spectacle of the Energy Station, the collection has to survive on quieter terms.

Tailoring provides one route. Trousers loosen, jackets adopt contemporary proportions, smooth shirts soften more structured pieces, while familiar wardrobe categories carry the friction between elegance and sport that Onitsuka Tiger identifies as central to the season. Floral surfaces and relaxed separates introduce another register, one closer to everyday dressing than runway theatre.

Pompilio has good instincts for interruption. Something polished rarely remains untouched for long. Formality meets a strange proportion; a feminine gesture encounters athletic construction; urban clothes retain enough looseness to suggest they could disappear into a real wardrobe after the show.

Yet recognition becomes quieter here too.

Remove the yellow set. Remove the Tiger Stripe below the ankle. Take away Honda graphics. Certain looks could travel surprisingly far before announcing who designed them.

Onitsuka Tiger now describes its direction in terms of a luxury lifestyle brand. Lifestyle requires the house code to survive across categories. Shoes have already achieved that level of shorthand. Ready-to-wear is still negotiating what its equivalent might be. The Energy Station itself argues for plurality. Pompilio wants different identities passing through one branded world, which naturally makes eclecticism part of the proposition. Too much coherence could sterilise the easy charm that currently makes clothes enjoyable.

But eclecticism becomes convincing only when an invisible hand connects its contradictions.

SS27 often finds that hand through styling. The next step is deeper: cut, proportion or construction capable of carrying Onitsuka Tiger identity even when every obvious brand marker disappears.

Onitsuka Tiger SS27 and the Problem with a Stronger Shoe

Fashion has spent years teaching brands that expansion is a sign of maturity. Sneakers lead to clothes, clothes lead to bags, bags lead eventually to the promise of a complete lifestyle. Logic makes commercial sense. Creatively, it can tempt a brand to treat equality between categories as the goal.

Onitsuka Tiger may have no reason to chase that equality.

Footwear being the strongest element of SS27 is almost embarrassingly appropriate. Shoes are exposing its greatest advantage. Few emerging fashion propositions begin with a product language that people can recognise from several metres away.

The mistake would be forcing ready-to-wear to compete by becoming louder.

Pompilio has another possibility. Let the shoes remain the gravitational centre while clothing develops slowly enough to acquire genuine codes instead of manufactured signatures. Onitsuka SS27 already shows flashes of that process, especially when sport changes tailoring from within or when technical construction survives after the obvious athletic references have disappeared.

For now, the imbalance remains visible. Some clothes build the Onitsuka Tiger world. Some still rely on the world around them.

Onitsuka Tiger knows what it looks like from the ankle down. The next era will depend on whether, when our eyes finally travel upward, the rest of the body can become just as unmistakable.
