On July 31, 2026, John Galliano was officially given a date with The Met. The clothes may be spectacular, but the harder question waiting inside the galleries is whether fashion history can admire brilliance without polishing away everything that made it uncomfortable.

A Galliano dress has always asked for more than a quick glance. Corsets distort posture, bias cuts pull fabric around the body, historical references collide for centuries, and an entire fictional universe can emerge before the model reaches the end of a runway. In May 2027, that machinery of imagination will move into The Met.

John Galliano: Horizons will be the first major museum exhibition to examine the full breadth of John Galliano’s work, stretching from his 1984 Central Saint Martins graduation collection through his own label, Givenchy, Christian Dior and Maison Margiela. The journey culminates with Spring 2024 Artisanal, the collection that returned John Galliano to the centre of fashion conversation through corsetry, extreme characterisation and a Paris runway staged like a fever dream.

The Costume Institute holds the world’s largest museum collection of Galliano’s work, and the exhibition will combine finished garments with accessories, sketches, research books and toiles. His process turns fragments of paintings, films, historical dress, fictional characters and places into elaborate visual systems, then asks couture techniques to make fantasy physically possible.

Yet one gallery will carry considerably more weight than a spectacular gown.

The opening section, “Bearings,” places his career against the cultural events surrounding it and directly confronts his antisemitic, racist and anti-Asian conduct in 2010 and 2011. Those incidents led to his dismissal from Dior and his namesake company, followed by a conviction in Paris for public insults based on race, religion, ethnicity or origin. The exhibition also addresses his treatment for substance addiction and later public acknowledgment of his actions.

Fashion exhibitions are extremely good at constructing mythology. A student collection becomes prophecy, an archive becomes evidence of genius, and decades of work acquire the clean trajectory of a career that always knew where it was going. Galliano’s history refuses that neat line.

His return already demonstrates how quickly fashion can rebuild prestige. Maison Margiela appointed him creative director in 2014, giving him the institutional space for a second act that eventually reached its loudest crescendo with the 2024 Artisanal collection. The industry response was ecstatic. Technique, atmosphere and storytelling placed John Galliano back inside fashion’s most flattering vocabulary: master, visionary, genius.

A museum changes the temperature of that praise.

Runway applause belongs to an industry capable of moving rapidly toward the next collection. The Met operates through preservation. Objects selected, researched and installed inside its galleries enter a longer cultural record, carrying authority far beyond a fashion season. Once Galliano’s work enters that frame at this scale, the conversation shifts from whether he remains creatively brilliant to what cultural institutions do with brilliance complicated by the person who produced it.

The exhibition’s remaining sections make that question even richer. “Horizons” follows Galliano’s recurring fascination with geography, history, art, storytelling and performance. “Atlas of Transformation” moves inside the studio, exposing research books, fittings, sketches and toiles to trace the path from reference to finished garment. Visitors will see how thoroughly imagination is constructed before it appears effortless on a runway.

And perhaps that construction is exactly what makes this retrospective so timely. John Galliano has spent a career manufacturing fantasy with extraordinary precision. Fashion has spent the past decade manufacturing another narrative around him, one centred on recovery, creative return and renewed admiration.

The Met now has the harder assignment.

When Horizons opens, the most provocative question will sit somewhere between the research books and the couture. How much context can surround beauty before it changes the way we see it? John Galliano has already proven that fashion can transform history into spectacle, and The Met 2027 will test whether spectacle can hold history without smoothing its sharpest edges.
