ALAINPAUL SS27 begins after the curtain call.
The collection, titled The Scene, imagines a dancer leaving the stage, moving through the dressing room, grabbing whatever is within reach, then continuing into the night. By the time the rave takes over, discipline has already melted into instinct.
That transition gives ALAINPAUL one of its clearest collections yet. Alain Paul’s history as a professional dancer still shapes the house deeply, but SS27 pushes the idea further. Dance becomes construction, proportion, tension, movement and adjustability. The collection starts asking a more important question for a young label: how can biography become a design system?
ALAINPAUL builds SS27 around choreographers who understand the physical relationship between stage and nightlife, including Hofesh Shechter, (LA)HORDE and Sharon Eyal. Their work often moves between formal performance, club energy and collective bodies, which gives the collection its emotional structure.
The dancer leaves a controlled environment and enters another space where movement becomes freer.
Tights appear as bustiers. Dresses shift into skirts through folding and repositioning. A tracksuit-like piece can sit close to eveningwear. Stirrup trousers retain rehearsal associations while gaining sharper tailoring. The whole wardrobe looks as though it has been assembled quickly, yet the construction underneath remains extremely deliberate. That tension gives ALAINPAUL SS27 its strongest identity.
ALAINPAUL treats adjustability as one of the main techniques of the season. Elastic panels pull jackets and coats toward the waist. Internal drawcords travel through dresses. Buttons allow skirts to shift height. Fastenings create several ways of wearing the same piece. Mousseline garments contain internal tunnels that let the wearer decide where volume gathers.
A dancer’s body carries discipline inside every spontaneous movement. ALAINPAUL builds garments through the same logic. The wearer can loosen, tighten, fold, gather and reposition because the structure already anticipates those choices. That principle gives the house a vocabulary with real longevity.
The forward shoulder becomes more pronounced. The waist sharpens through elastic shaping. A reversed-peak lapel gives jackets a slightly off-kilter identity. Stirrup trousers elongate the leg while still carrying rehearsal references. Low-slung leather trousers shift the collection toward club energy.
The silhouette remains lean through the torso, then releases through drape, volume or movement elsewhere.
That architecture feels specific. The tailoring carries physical tension, almost like posture. A shoulder sits slightly forward. A waist looks held. A trouser line pulls downward. The garment appears aware of how the body is standing.
The strongest looks in ALAINPAUL SS27 keep slipping between categories.
Rehearsal tights become bustiers while still retaining the memory of stretch and body control. Folded dresses operate as skirts, keeping their original volume visible in the new shape. Silver-foiled distressed denim pulls club light into an everyday material. Metallic organza catches movement with a harder shimmer while staying lightweight around the body.
Then come the thousand-ruffle pieces. These are the most theatrical garments in the collection, built to move dramatically and create volume around the figure. They carry the scale and energy of stage costume, while the rest of the wardrobe stays closer to repeatable dressing.
Material confusion becomes another key language.
ALAINPAUL treats nylon with enough finesse to make it appear luxurious. Silk is engineered to behave with the visual directness of technical fabric. Metallic organza introduces a more reflective surface. Stretch wool holds tailoring close to the body. Crushed satin carries softness while still supporting print.
A fabric associated with rehearsal can enter eveningwear. A luxurious textile can take on the bluntness of club clothing. The boundary between technical and precious becomes fluid.
That idea reaches one of its most personal expressions through crushed pink satin printed with signatures and handwritten notes taken from worn pointe shoes. Instead of placing a ballet shoe on the runway, ALAINPAUL uses the social traces left on the object.
One of the most useful technical lessons comes from Alain Paul’s work on Paris Opera costumes with Imre and Marne Van Opstal. Stage costume depends heavily on viewpoint. An audience sees only what the costume reveals from a distance, which means construction can be reduced to the sections that matter visually.
ALAINPAUL brings that logic into SS27. A shirt can become only the visible front. A cardigan can collapse into a plastron. Surface replaces full garment construction in certain pieces. What appears complete from one angle may be radically reduced underneath. This gives the collection a subtle trompe-l’œil quality.
SS27 also marks ALAINPAUL’s first live-performance presentation. Choreography by Eric Christison brings dancers and models into the same space, while sound by Senjan Jansen in collaboration with Shygirl pushes the room toward club territory. Paris Opera principal Germain Louvet appears among the performers. Byredo Animalique scents the environment, extending the experience beyond sound and movement.
The business logic behind the collection becomes especially clear in the most labor-intensive pieces. The heavy ruffled garments and hand knits are produced through special order because of their complexity, weight and craft requirements.
That decision is smart for a young house. The runway can still carry highly theatrical pieces while the wider product offer relies on repeatable tailoring, denim, accessories and adaptable separates. The thousand ruffles sell the dream. The adjustable jacket has to build the business.
The audience should eventually sense the training inside the clothes without needing to see the studio. That is the real milestone of ALAINPAUL SS27.
