Magnesium Is Having a Full Body-Care Evolution

Magnesium may sound like a single ingredient, but magnesium chloride, magnesium sulfate and Magnesium PCA behave very differently once they meet the skin.

For generations, magnesium body care meant one thing: Epsom salt tipped into a hot bath after a long day. Today, magnesium has escaped the bathtub.

That expansion comes with one useful question. Does applying magnesium to the skin offer the same benefits? The answer is more complicated, and considerably more useful, than many body-care labels suggest.

Magnesium Is a Mineral Salt, and It Behaves Like One

The easiest way to understand magnesium in body care is to forget the image of a heavy mineral sitting inside a cream. Cosmetic formulas usually contain magnesium as a salt, where positively charged magnesium ions are paired with ingredients such as chloride, sulfate, or PCA.

Once many of these salts meet water, they dissolve and separate into ions. That explains why magnesium works especially naturally in sprays, bath products, gels, and the water phase of body lotions.

Magnesium chloride has one particularly useful characteristic: it loves water. In its solid form it is highly hygroscopic, meaning it readily attracts moisture from its surroundings, and it can even absorb enough water to start dissolving itself. This is also why concentrated magnesium chloride solutions can have that distinctive slippery feel behind the misleading name “magnesium oil.” There is usually no oil involved. The mineral itself is water-soluble; whether the finished product feels watery, silky, sticky, or rich depends largely on everything surrounding it.

Magnesium sulfate, or Epsom salt, behaves differently. Its familiar crystalline form actually contains water molecules within the crystal structure, which is why its full chemical form is magnesium sulfate heptahydrate. In body formulas, magnesium sulfate can do more than provide the magnesium story: formulators also use it to influence viscosity and help stabilize certain water-in-oil emulsions.

Then Magnesium PCA changes the personality again. Pairing magnesium with PCA creates an ingredient used primarily as a humectant and skin conditioner, so it fits naturally beside glycerin and other moisture-binding ingredients in lotions.

Magnesium salts are also non-volatile. They do not evaporate from the skin like alcohol or fragrance molecules, and they are not famously light-sensitive actives in the way retinol is. The formulation challenge is more about water, salt concentration, and texture.

Because magnesium salts are electrolytes, adding too much can change the thickness of a cream or disturb an emulsion, so formulators have to choose salt-tolerant thickeners and emulsifiers carefully. Research on mineral-rich body creams has shown that changing salt concentration can substantially alter viscosity and even trigger phase separation.

Magnesium May Be Most Convincing at the Surface of the Skin

Some of the most useful evidence for magnesium body care has little to do with muscles.

Research on magnesium-rich salt solutions has found improvements in skin hydration, roughness, and barrier function in people with dry or compromised skin. Magnesium salts can interact with water and support conditions that help the outer skin barrier function more effectively.

The mineral does not need to penetrate deeply into muscles to have a reason to exist in a lotion. Of course, the entire formula still matters. Magnesium forms one part of the product, not a magical explanation for everything the skin feels afterward.

Products described as “transdermal magnesium” often imply that the mineral can travel through the skin and enter the body in meaningful amounts. Healthy skin, however, exists partly to stop substances from crossing it easily.

Current research suggests that magnesium ions have considerable difficulty penetrating intact skin. A 2026 study examining magnesium movement through the skin found that the stratum corneum, the outermost barrier, strongly limited penetration under normal conditions.

That means rubbing on a magnesium lotion should not be treated as equivalent to taking a magnesium supplement. Magnesium can have local effects at the skin's surface while still being poorly absorbed into the body through intact skin.

The connection between magnesium and muscles is real. Inside the body, magnesium plays an important role in normal muscle contraction, nerve signaling and energy production.

NOEM Magnesium Body Butters

NEOM has made magnesium one of the signatures of its body category. Its Magnesium Body Butters contain 88 mg of magnesium per 5 ml, using magnesium chloride inside rich formulas with shea butter, aloe, grapeseed oil, and coconut oil. Magnesium becomes the constant while fragrance and texture decide whether the body butter belongs at breakfast, after a workout, or beside the bed.
