On July 30, TAG Heuer, racing-inspired fashion label Team Ikuzawa and Bamford Watch Department launched their second collaboration: the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph x Team Ikuzawa, a timepiece inspired by Japanese motorsport of the 1970s and 1980s.
The trio’s second watch draws inspiration from the simplicity and restraint of a vintage Roadmaster stopwatch. The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph x Team Ikuzawa features a 39mm “Glassbox” steel case, and is topped by a domed sapphire crystal that magnifies the dial. The dial space appears to be a priority for the trio, since it is further maximized by the bezel-free architecture.
That deliberate magnification and maximization makes it impossible for customers to tear their eyes away from the captivating dial design of the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph x Team Ikuzawa. Red and white - the signature colors of the iconic Team Ikuzawa racing team - are also the dominant tones of the dial. On a surface, these colors are expertly combined to create a playful and eye-catching contrast. While a white hue and the Clous de Paris texture cover the entire dial, vibrant red details - such as the lacquered central hand, the minute sub-dial and the brand names - create striking accents for the watch.
For the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph x Team Ikuzawa, the trio omit the running seconds at the 6 o’clock position, creating a negative space for the Team Ikuzawa brading. This change is reminiscent of vintage racing chronographs, as that specific position typically featured a blank space for displaying a racing team's name or a sponsor's logo. Another highlight of the watch is the sub-dial at the 3 o’clock position - serving as a 30-minute counter - which draws design inspiration from a pinball-and-roulette-wheel.
Beyond its appearance, the functional aspect of the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph x Team Ikuzawa is also carefully considered. The timepiece is equipped with the TH20-10 movement, featuring an 80-hour power reserve, a column-wheel mechanism, a vertical clutch and a bidirectional winding system.
The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph x Team Ikuzawa is limited to 150 pieces and is priced at 8850£. It is delivered in a presentation case inspired by Team Ikuzawa toolbox, which also includes a travel pouch, Team Ikuzawa charms and - most notably - two additional straps that can be swapped for the default seven-link bracelet. One of them is a white perforated leather strap with red stitching, while the other is a fabric strap featuring a white-and-red striped pattern.
For the second lap, TAG Heuer, Team Ikuzawa and Bamford Watch Department present a bold design, which is not merely a reinterpretation but a tribute to the aesthetic values of Japanese racing culture. The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph x Team Ikuzawa therefore makes makes future collaborations between this trio something highly anticipated.
