The most interesting thing about the 2026 Bentley Continental GT S is that it understands proportion. In a range now topped by the more extreme Speed, the S lands in the place many grand tourers dream of occupying: fast enough to feel faintly absurd, composed enough to remain desirable every day. Bentley launched the new Continental GT S in January as a more driver-focused addition to the fourth-generation line-up, positioning it as a car for owners who want the sharper edge of a performance machine without surrendering the civility that has long defined the marque. The phrase “King” of the Grand Tourers has been overused for years, yet here it feels unexpectedly apt.

The headline is the new hybrid powertrain. Bentley’s High Performance Hybrid combines a 4.0-litre crossplane V8 with electric assistance for a total of 680 PS, 930 Nm and 671 bhp, making this the most powerful Continental GT S ever built. Bentley says it reaches 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds, runs on to 306 km/h, and can travel up to 80 km in pure electric mode. That last figure matters more than it might once have done. In a city, the car can move with the hush of silent luxury; on an open road, the sports exhaust restores the V8’s harder-edged voice. Bentley also notes that this powertrain outperforms the previous W12 Speed on power, torque and performance.

The chassis is where the GT S becomes especially persuasive. Bentley has given it the Bentley Performance Active Chassis, previously reserved for the GT Speed and GT Mulliner, bringing together all-wheel steering, an electronic limited-slip differential, torque vectoring, twin-valve dampers and the 48-volt Bentley Dynamic Ride active anti-roll system. Read as a list, that can sound merely technical. On the road, it amounts to a large coupe acquiring a more disciplined body language: flatter through corners, tidier on turn-in, calmer when changing direction at speed.

Visually, Bentley has given the S the darker mood it deserves. Blackline trim, dark-tint lamps, gloss-black detailing and 22-inch ten-spoke wheels bring a more shadowed, purposeful look, while inside there is a sportier mix of Dinamica technical fabric, a unique two-colour interior split and Piano Black veneer. The fourth-generation Continental’s broader design shift is present too, including the move to single headlamps, the first on a mainstream Bentley since the 1950s. It gives the car a cleaner, more modern face.

For all the engineering, the appeal of this Bentley remains elegantly simple. The Bentley Continental GT S feels like the model in the range that best understands what a modern grand tourer should be: Swift, beautifully judged, slightly menacing in appearance, and entirely at ease with the idea that true performance today includes refinement as much as force.
