Nike Air Max has always lived between technology and feeling. Its visible Air unit never stops at a cushioning story, it became a window into desire, a tiny architectural promise that sneakers could look futuristic, emotional, and strangely personal all at once. With the launch of Nike’s Air Works program, that promise is being handed to a new generation of designers.

The inaugural program gathers young individual creatives across from Beijing, London, Los Angeles, Mumbai, New York, Paris, Shanghai, and Tokyo at Nike’s headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon. From May 11 to May 14, they will work with Nike designers and engineers to develop distinctive 3D printed shoes for Nike Air Max styles in partnership with Zellerfeld.

Instead of treating innovation as a cold laboratory exercise, each designer brings a breath of fresh air into the shoes, allowing Nike Air Max to hold its own expression to reflect their personal identity and community. The result underlying a cultural relay, where Nike Air Max becomes the object passed between cities, memories, and creative accents.

Nike is also framing the program through heritage. The project builds on 40 years of Air innovation, while giving participants access to Nike spaces such as the Air Manufacturing Innovation facility, Department of Nike Archives, Nike Sport Research Lab, Blue Ribbon Studio, and Bowerman Footwear Lab. The archive gives the designers a past to argue with, while 3D printing gives them a future to test in real time.

Each designer will release a limited-run friends and family version of their shoe within their own community in the year leading to Air Max Day 2027. Instead of chasing mass spectacle first, Nike lets the story begin locally.

For Nike Air Max, the romance of 3D printed shoes now lies in watching technology become personal, cultural, and beautifully unfinished.
