Cologne Tower’s Grand Opening

On November 21, 2001, Cologne Tower (KölnTurm) officially opened its doors — marking a defining moment for Cologne’s skyline and modern architecture. Rising 148.5 meters across 44 storeys, this striking skyscraper was realized through a collaboration between the French architect Jean Nouvel and German firm Kohl & Kohl.

Built in the heart of Cologne’s MediaPark, the tower was conceived not just as an office building, but as a multifaceted landmark. It houses offices, shops, conference halls, a restaurant, and even a radio station — all connected vertically through a suspended central core structure and a distinctive glass facade.

One of the most poetic aspects of Cologne Tower is its glass façade. Rather than being a simple wall of glass, Nouvel used screen-printed images of the Cologne Cathedral and the city skyline. As daylight shifts, different reflections and combinations of these historic motifs emerge — creating a dynamic visual dialogue between the new tower and Cologne’s heritage.

Though the tower opened in 2001, its 30th-floor restaurant and public viewing terrace didn’t welcome visitors until June 2006 — offering panoramic city views and a space where architecture meets leisure.
