Designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel, the dress was built for scale. Its voluminous sleeves, fitted waist, layered skirt, and 25-foot train had to hold their own inside St Paul’s Cathedral while remaining legible through television screens. Antique Carrickmacross lace, thousands of pearls and sequins added historical and decorative weight, yet the silhouette created the cultural impact. It transformed Diana into the image of a storybook princess at a moment when the royal ceremony was becoming mass entertainment.

Puff sleeves grew larger, skirts became fuller, and dramatic trains returned to wedding boutiques across different price levels. Brides could borrow the fantasy through one exaggerated detail even when the original scale remained impossible to reproduce.

That tension keeps the Princess Diana wedding dress alive in cultural memory: a royal wedding dress that captured the princess the world imagined just before she became the woman it could no longer contain.
