Life-sized cardboard cutouts of the models were shipped to five cities, where local photographers turned the same images into entirely different stories.

Conceived by Glenn Martens and art director Christopher Simmonds, Multiplicities starts in the controlled environment of a studio before giving up part of that control. Photographers in London, Shanghai, Cairo, Rio de Janeiro and New Delhi received the cutouts and placed them within their own streets, landmarks and everyday surroundings.

Piccadilly Circus frames the D-ONE bag and D-COCCO heels. Three-dimensional denim and Bicolor Leather land in Shanghai. Wrinkled knits appear beside the pyramids in Cairo, while Rio takes the campaign to Ipanema and New Delhi places trompe l’oeil denim among rickshaws.

The cardboard gimmick carries a useful idea beneath its humour. International campaigns traditionally create one polished image and distribute it everywhere. Diesel reverses that process by circulating the subject first and allowing each location to interfere with the final result.

That approach fits Martens’ wider attraction to distortion and participation. The clothes remain consistent, while scale, light, architecture and local visual language keep changing around them.

The D-ONE bag serves as the commercial anchor throughout, but Multiplicities makes the campaign itself feel less like a finished advertisement and more like an object passed from hand to hand. For Diesel, going global suddenly means surrendering a little control.
